Chapter Twelve

The two walked a few blocks to the Cantinetta dei Romeo.

“Uh, I’m guessing by the name Cantinetta dei Romeo this is owned by your family?” Allie said, standing back to take in the café.

“Just a little place to showcase our wines in the city. A fun project we took on a few years ago. We included a bakery and we offer an aperitivo menu, nothing too fancy. Now, for our purposes, we’re going to get a few items for our next destination.”

Allie was terribly curious about what he had in store for her. She watched as Francesco spoke in rapid Italian. Oh, that language—it practically made her panties wet just hearing it. To think he wasn’t even whispering things into her ear and it still had that effect on her.

The woman behind the counter loaded up a bag with several items and with a few ciaos and a prestos to say farewell, they left the little Romeo wine showcase and worked their way back in the direction of the river.

When they arrived at the river, they came to a tall, honey-gold six-story building close to the Ponte Vecchio. A doorman greeted Francesco by name, which was interesting. Was this some hotel of sorts where he brought all of his women? Well, Allie certainly wasn’t going to be one of them.

They strolled through the contemporary marble-filled lobby decorated in subtle monochromatic whites and grays, past a terrace that overlooked the water, where people gathered over cocktails. Francesco steered Allie to an exit sign, which led to a staircase going down. They took the steps two by two until they reached the bottom level, where he opened a door onto a grassy lawn right on the banks of the river. Allie glanced around and here and there were a handful of couples, all seemingly lost in their respective conversations. No one even turned to look at them.

“Wow,” she said. “Your own private beach?”

He grinned. “Sort of.” He opened the bag and pulled out what looked to be a tablecloth, and he spread it out across the grass. “I thought this would be a nice place to have a late-evening picnic.”

Allie couldn’t believe it. He’d sneakily picked up supplies for their private picnic and brought her to this exclusive site. So it wasn’t a ploy to bed her like all of those women he was in the pictures with after all. What a relief.

“Francesco,” she said, shaking her head in disbelief. “You don’t cease to amaze me with your fantastic plans. We’ve done more in one evening in Florence than most people do in a year!”

“I aim to please, signora,” he said, offering for her to sit on their makeshift blanket. “Maria gave me another tablecloth to use as a blanket in case we get cold. Let’s sit on this, and we can spread out the picnic next to us with the other one.”

Lights had come on in the city and on the storied bridge nearby; the Ponte Vecchio was reflected in the still waters of the river, and it felt downright magical.
